Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world with approximately 1,197,000,000 people speaking Chinese, of which 873,000 million speak Mandarin. In addition to the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan, Mandarin Chinese is also spoken in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines, and Mongolia. China is one of the world’s oldest and richest continuous cultures, over 5000 years old.
Too difficult to learn? Surprisingly not! Chinese has a relatively uncomplicated grammar. Unlike French, German or English, Chinese has no verb conjugation (no need to memorize verb tenses!) and no gender and number distinctions.
Intro to Chinese
This elementary course is the beginning of a journey into the Chinese language, and the Chinese speaking world. Bring an open mind and a willingness to observe, and then initiate the speech, sounds, and gestures of Chinese speakers. No prior experience necessary. Students will develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills and will be able to communicate verbally in Chinese language within given situations. In particular, they will be introduced to “pinyin” and distinguish between the four tones in Chinese language.
